The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a scary, entertaining (for those who like to be frightened) movie and a fun addition to the Dracula legend. Complementing a good plot and special effects is a cast that includes Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, Woody Norman and David Dastmalchian. Along with the film on both Blu-ray and DVD, this 2-disc set also has numerous bonus features including deleted scenes and an alternate opening, commentary, “From the Pits of Hell: Dracula Reimagined”, “Evil Is Aboard: The Making of The Last Voyage of the Demeter — and more.
Prey
20th Century Studios, rated R, Blu-ray
If you enjoy a good action thriller movie with some sci-fi and horror thrown in for good measure, Prey is another good movie for Halloween. Set in the Comanche Nation of the Great Plains in 1719, the film follows a young woman, Naru (Amber Midthunder), as she attempts to find a predator who is putting her people in danger. And while Naru has incredible hunting and survival skills and she is a fierce warrior, she is up against an alien predator with advanced weaponry and surveillance skills who appears to be unbeatable.
Filmed in Alberta, Prey features a decent plot, good cinematography and special effects along with lots of non-stop action and gruesome violence (rated R). The movie was nominated for six Primetime Emmy Awards including “Outstanding Television Movie.” Joining Amber Midthunder is a talented cast that includes Dakota Beavers, Dane DiLiegro and Michelle Thrush.
